Forget the "Mall"

There have been so many articles written and statements made about the proposed zone text change to the Interchange Zone located near I 691, which would allow mixed use, that it is becoming an event. As many of you know, I grew up in a city that allowed mixed use. I never really thought much of it. To me it was sort of nice walking down the street a few blocks and being able to buy groceries in a small market, or getting your dry cleaning done. But that is left for cities, not suburbs, I believe.

After World War II, the idea of the “suburb” was born. People wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Now, 60 some odd years later, it is hard to tell the difference in some places. Why would people want to move to a suburb where there is supposed peace and quiet and fill it up with commercial development. Oh, that is because we can’t live in the cities anymore, they are crowded and filled with crime, some people say. I say what do you think is going to happen if we keep putting more and more commercialism in this town? Many suburban towns are taking on the look and feel of a mini city these days. Many people say it is just more convenient to have everything at a stones throw. Then you really must want to live in a highly developed area.

Ask yourself this question. Why did you move to Cheshire in the first place? Probably because of the school system, the low crime, the nice parks, space to breathe without crowds of people on top of you and the absence of a huge amount of traffic (even that is getting to be a problem). The other day I was going down West Johnson Avenue around 4 p.m. and I could not believe the traffic backing up at the intersection of Peck Lane and West Johnson Avenue. I kept saying to myself, “could you imagine if there was something actually to  go to (like a lifestyle center) in this area, you would not be able to move!!  I remember a few years ago, speaking with the late Chief Gary Walberg and we were talking about traffic, and he mentioned that nearly 60,000 cars a day traveled up  and down Rt. 10. What would it be like with this Lifestyle Center I wonder? This town really needs to get itself together and decide what it wants to be and what it wants to do. Does every town have to look the same in this country? What about individuality? Now there are many many people who see this Lifestyle Center as an exciting addition to Cheshire. They are entitled to their opinions. Many feel the tax burden on themselves must be lifted and this Lifestyle Center would be the answer. As for the housing part of the proposal, I do think we need to think about the potential impact on the school system. I went to high school with 50 kids in my class. Does that mean you can’t learn? not necessarily. I did. I had 535 kids in my graduating class and we had at the same 23 state of Connecticut Scholars. So I don’t know, but things were different almost 30 years ago. Some people argue we need more industry. That is fine. I remember a few years ago reading in an area newspaper that Swiss Army Knifes World Headquarters was going to move out of Shelton. I contacted the Economic Development office here in town. They did not pursue it. Swiss Army Knife went to Monroe and brought with it millions of revenue.  We missed out. Then, I told the town about Stew Leonards–no. I told them about Trader Joes which is similar to Whole Foods store that could have been built where the old McPhees Garage was—no. What do they want? I think they just want the  housing because it is fast to build and an easy profit that is what I believe.

I know many don’t agree, but what does it look like to you? I don’t know, but as I said before, I grew up in a city and these things don’t really bother me and besides, if the decision of the Planning and Zoning Commission is challenged and it ends up in court, I probably will be long gone from here before a shovel even enters the dirt up there. I say again, forget that property near 691 and fix up West Main Street and the old Ball and Socket Factory–expand the linear trail which would go right by it–have a shuttle bus link to the Watch Factory and take if from there.

I will have new posts after the holiday.

Happenings

I am going to have abbreviated postings this week because of the July 4th holiday on Wednesday. I do have some news. I received a 30 second public service announcement video from Chief Michael Cruess that he participated in with members of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association.

The announcement is basically asking all residents to obey the rules of the road, don’t drink and drive and to have a safe summer. The PSA which can also be seen on WFSB’s website and of course periodically on WFSB Channel 3, will run until Labor Day. I want to thank the Chief and remind everyone that the Cheshire Police Department will continue the random DUI and seat belt and car seat roadblocks throughout the July 4th holiday. Here is the link to the Public Service Announcement featuring Cheshire’s own Police Chief  Michael “Party Like a Rock Star” Cruess.

WILL I OR WON’T I?

As you know, I have always said I would NEVER run for political office in this town or anytown. But many of you over the months have asked if I would run for the Town Council. I can’t say at this time, but I am speaking with my family and one of the political parties. I am not going to say which one at this time. Many have asked my husband to run, but because he is a state employee, he is subject to the Hatch Act, which prohibits him from seeking elected office, so that ends that.

Those of you who are familiar with me know that many people who run this town do not like me because I speak from my heart. I try to tell it like I see it and many do not agree. But even those who do not agree with me, know I always have the best interest of the town in mind. I always was interested in politics, that is how I got involved in journalism when I was younger. I will really have to think about it. It would be a courageous undertaking on my part and would take up much of my time. But you all know, I would take it very seriously and do the best for the people, all the people and for this town. Believe me, I will let you know my decision.

UPDATE

Sometime within the next few weeks, I hope to bring you all some news about the meeting between the Town Council Ordinance Committee and the Public Safety Commission (PSC), to discuss the possibility of expanding the powers of the PSC to include complaints or suggestions regarding the Cheshire Police Department. My feeling as I have said time and time again, is that complaints are a minimal part of a police commission, but this is a small step in the right direction. I believe that if the PSC does not want to take on this challenge, which I hope they will for a six month trial period, that the Town Council will be able to find people who will step up to the plate and take the initiative. As you all read from one of my older posts, the Police Chief will be having extended office hours beginning in September. I invite all residents to take advantage of this happening. You don’t necessarily have to complain, hopefully you will offer suggestions. I will keep you updated on this issue.

I have also gotten a good response from the drawing of my proposed “Lifestyle” center which involves renovating the old Ball and Socket Factory. I am working on an expanded version of the drawing, which will show more of the outside and the inside. As always, to keep you on your toes, I will have a “surprise.” If any of you want to see the original drawing, it is under the post “It’s All Political.”
