A Flower in the Attic

I remember years ago seeing a movie starring Glenda Jackson whom I believe was one of the best actresses around. The movie was entitled “Flowers in the Attic” and centered around three children that were shunned by Jackson (the grandmother), because her daughter bore them out of wedlock. The storyline took place during the middle ages when Victorian beliefs were very strong.

It is strange because even during the time of the Roman Empire, pedophilia was acceptable but adultery was not. Children born out of wedlock were shunned. The storyline has the children’s mother visiting the grandmother who is of course outraged that her daughter would not only bear children out of wedlock, but actually bring them to visit her.

She forces them to live in an upstairs bedroom in the attic. At first, they are fed three times a day. But as days turn into weeks and the daughter does not leave, the children are virtually left to starve to death. As they know they are dying, they try to imagine some sort of childhood. They look for toys, the put on clothes they find. But eventually they grow weaker and weaker and they pass away. They are forever locked away physically and mentally.

We all have our “attics.” We all look for ways to make pain go away or make people believe things are not what they really are.  I have my flower in the attic-the attic is his mind. I know one day he will find the steps and come down them and face life head on.

When I worked at the Bridgeport Post years ago, I remember editing a story for a book about Bridgeport myself and a few other staff members were putting together.  I came across an article about a boy. He was 15 years old at the time. It was the late 19th, early 20th century. Of course things were different then. Parents were PARENTS. Not the watered down version the state forces us to be today.

Well, to make a long story short, the father was getting angrier and angrier at his son. He was ready to disown him. He called him lazy. He was tired of him not doing anything-school or work. He finally got fed up, gave him his life savings of nearly $500 and threw him out. The father told him not to come back unless he made something of himself.

It was hard decision. The father was depressed for many years and finally died not knowing what ever happened to his son.

What happened to this kid? You all know his name. Who was this “flower” in the attic that finally bloomed?

Samuel Chase.

A Positive Sign

I did notice a positive development in the sign on poles issue. It’s too bad as I have stated many times. People should be allowed to express themselves.

This activity went on for years in this town until the few people that THINK they run Cheshire decided many years ago that they were going to try to control people by using the police department or any other means they thought necessary to keep people quiet.

Only their opinion counts. They spoonfed you the information through the Herald and that Channel 14 which should be taken off the air because it is a propaganda tool.

You know what, for many years you sat there and took it. Some of you still do. You think it’s better to cowtow to them. You think you will move ahead. You might for a while. But in the end the REAL POWER IN CHESHIRE-THE PEOPLE-will have the ultimate say.

Now, speaking of the real power, I did receive a reply from the Attorney General’s office on Dec. 26 regarding my complaint with Campion Ambulance. I tried to contact the manager of this ambulance company many times but he refuses to return my calls.

I am not playing when it comes to my family. Now I don’t know how far this will go, but I ask any of you out there, if your CHILD was told by a public safety official or a teacher or a day care provider or any adult for that matter that if they did not do something they (the adult) wanted the child to do that they MIGHT be tasered by the police, how would you feel. If you were a daycare provider or a teacher, you would be in BIG TROUBLE period. You would not be getting away with that statement considering there were several witnesses that heard the statement.

Attorney General Blumenthal personally took time and typed this letter and signed it. IT is not a copy of a signature. It is his in ink.

The letter basically states that he “very much appreciates my letter raising my concerns and questions.”

“My staff will review your letter and will contact you as soon as possible.” The letter goes on to say the following: “We hope to address these issues and will DO EVERYTHING possible within our LEGAL AUTHORITY to assist you.”

Two years ago, I attended a tribute to the Marine Corps at a VFW Hall on Barnum Avenue in Stratford. Attorney Blumental sat at my table. Cindy knows ALL THE VIPS Cheshire!!

The Marine Corp awarded one of my sons who is in college a partial scholarship. Attorney Blumenthal is a Marine and he is fair and honest. I know his staff will make the right decision whatever it is.

The point is that if the manager of Campion had called me to discuss the issue, it probably would have been resolved. But some people who wear a badge think they are God Almighty. They are NOT!!!

Hopefully this will be resolved in a positive manner. I am always open to discussion about issues despite what I know must have been said between up the street and Campion Ambulance.

I have had to use their services a few times when I became ill, and they have always been professional. So hopefully we will discuss the issue between ourselves and it will be forgotten.

To end: The Inland Wetlands Commission will be Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall to make a decision on the proposed Lifestyle Center application. I hope as many of you as possible show up.

More posts later—Happy New Year!!!
