More Updates
Posted By CindyI just wanted to post some updates before the end of the weekend. For starters, I just received a letter from the “Committee for Senior Property Tax Relief, Cheshire, Ct.”
The letter is dated Oct. 27, 2008. I did know about this letter and briefly published it a few weeks ago, but then I got told to hold up on it because “of the timing.”
That is all well and good but if it were myself and I did not want the other side to respond, I would have mailed this letter out on Saturday, Nov. 1st or worst case scenario, Monday, Nov. 3rd before 11 a.m.
Don’t take Elizabeth Esty for granted. She is VERY EFFICIENT and I am sure she will put together a response by Saturday or Sunday. In fairness: I will run a response from Ms. Esty is she so desires.
Anyway: here is the letter:
This Election season we keep on seeing references to helping senior citizens. This is why we are proud to voice our support of Al Adinolfi for the 103rd District of Cheshire, Hamden and Wallingford. Al is a champion for senior citizens, and a champion for our entire community. Not everyone may know this, but in 2006, our own Al Adinolfi spearheaded an effort in the Legislature to help our seniors stay in their homes. Al brought forth legislation that would provide eligible seniors property tax relief, allowing them to remain in their family’s homestead without being driven out by high property taxes.
This bill passed in both the House and Senate, and was ultimately signed into law by the Governor in 2006. The law gives towns the option to freeze property taxes on homes owned by eligible seniors. Without Al’s efforts in championing this bill in the Legislature back in 2006, who knows how many seniors would have been forced from their homes.
We know this because in 2006, we were among over 3,000 concerned Cheshire voters who signed a petition to bring this into action in Cheshire. The first time we brought this before the Town Council, we were met with some hesitation. It was only after Al worked with us and garnered our 3,000 signatures to demand an answer when Esty and her fellow Democrats reluctantly agreed to evaluate the program.
So, you can imagine our surprise when we saw Mrs. Esty’s campaign literature where she claims that she “…led the charge to enact one of the most innovative and generous senior tax credit programs in the state.” This is not a true statement. What Mrs. Esty will not tell you, the voters, is the fact that she was on the town’s Ordinance Committee when we first asked for tax relief for our senior citizens, and what did Mrs. Esty do? “Esty along with her fellow Democrats took no action until our petition was submitted.”
Al is not out of touch with us, his constituency. In fact, this legislation he helped usher through the Legislature only helps proves the point- Al Adinolfi looks out for the interests of his constituents, his community, and is well aware of the issues we face as homeowners, and citizens.
For these reasons, we encourage you to vote for Al Adinolfi on November 4.
Respectfully yours,
Ellen Carson, Phil Coppeto, Marion Nero, Derf Kleist, Ed Dalton and Shirley Cogle
In other news:
I did contact the Police Department regarding the person who came knocking on my door this past Wednesday afternoon asking if I wanted to receive a free estimate on interior or exterior house painting. I told him no-we do just about all our work ourselves on our home.
The person, a lone male, had a clipboard and was writing things down on it. He handed me a brochure of a well-known painting company. I went on their website and it is really nice.
Anyway, I didn’t think anything of it, until I read the full article in the Herald about the burglary on Coleman Road. The article stated that the ALLEGED burglars would knock on doors, apparently to see if someone was home. If someone came to the door, they would say they were from a “university” (I will not name the University at this time) and that they were conducting an election survey. Boy I bet they sat up all night thinking of that one. I wonder why they made a reference to this particular university. I wonder if there is a connection. Worth finding out!!
So after reading that article, I really got the creeps. I wondered if this was a copycat incident. I mean, look, anyone can say they are representing any organization or company for that matter. There was a home invasion recently in a Connecticut town where the intruders dressed up as Police Officers. Other home invaders have dressed up as Postal Workers, Utility Workers. It goes on and on.
So on Friday, I did e-mail the Police Chief and told him of my concern. He responded right away as he always does. He did carbon copy to Det. Vignola. Bottom line: they did put in a call to this painting company.
I actually managed after a few hours on speed dial, to get in touch with their customer service and informed them of my concerns. A customer service representative did inform me their company was in the area that day soliciting. I did inform the Police Chief and I received a timely response in an e-mail from Det. Vignola to the Chief: (I have REDACTED CERTAIN INFORMATION SO AS NOT TO COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE CASE). I am also adding “ALLEGED BURGLARS.”
Chief,
I have called and left a message for the ……painting service.
I am confident that the person at Mrs. Kleist door is not related to our incident on Coleman Rd. Our suspects don’t match the same description, and our timeline of the arrestee’s does not have them farther north than………Rd. Also the voluntary written statements taken do not reflect these arrestee’s were portraying themselves as painters.
Our ALLEGED burglars were knocking on doors and if a homeowner was present, they would tell the homeowner that they were University……. students conducting a survey about the upcoming election.
I have not heard back from THE PAINTING COMPANY as of this writing, but when contact is made, I will also discuss the requirements for soliciting from door to door and the required permits. I have also spoken to the local media, and encouraged residents to call in suspicious activity including vehicle sand persons. If any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Bob
