A “Pole”- arizing issue

May 29th, 2007 by Cindy

I don’t feel very good today, I guess all this pollen flying around is making me miserable, so I will be short. I know this issue has been mentioned elsewhere, but I just have to make a comment on it. I know the people involved, but for political correctness, I will use clever words.
It seems A Senior has been putting up signs expressing his opinion regarding the proposed zone change petition by W/S Development which could result in a substantial amount of housing and possibly a “lifestyle center” to boot in the north end of town near I-691. Now this person is entitled to his opinion. A Senior has put up the signs which say to the effect “No Mall” “No Zone Change” etc on A Seniors property. A Senior has also been putting them on the telephone poles as well. When A Senior puts up the signs on the telephone poles a Major Businessman goes out either late at night or early in the morning and takes them down. I did call AT&T and asked about putting signs on telephone poles, i,e, tag sale, lost dog, etc. and other signs that people have been doing for years and years on end, and she indicated that AT&T did not encourage this for workers’ safety (i.e. they have to climb the pole), but they were not perturbed about it. The poles are AT&T property, so it is their call. I did ask the Town Planning and Zoning about the issue, and I am supposed to get back to them on Wednesday. But as I stated earlier ,the poles belong to AT&T. Let me make this clear, this is a two-sided issue. Not as much as putting up a sign, but the fact that they are being taken down by someone is more disturbing. Somebody doesn’t feel comfortable and takes it upon themselves to remove them. The signs are not vulgar or offensive–I guess they are to this person-but this is almost censorship.
This sort of reminds me of the Stew Leonard issue that I covered over 10 years ago when I was editor of the Amity Observer. But even in that hotly debated issue, people put up signs on the lawns or poles, and the opposition would just put up their side of the issue alongside the opposing viewpoints signs. This would be a lot more mature instead of ripping the other persons signs down. All sides are entitled to their opinions, as long as it is professional. I guess we will have to see what happens. Oh I have to run now because my toilet is clogged and my air conditioning doesn’t work and a Major Businessman’s company has come over to fix it!

I LOVE TIM WHITE!!
As most of you know, I already love and respect John White, who stands up for the American Way, truth and justice for all and I mean ALL! The other night I happened to go on TimWhitelistens which is Tim White’s blog. Tim White is one of our council people who is also like his father-open minded and respectful of other people’s opinions. Tim is not afraid to post other sides. I happened to look on “other blogs” and saw “Undergroundtownhall.” I couldn’t believe it. It is an honor for a humble shy person as myself to be listed on Tim Whites webblog. I always knew Tim was a person with intelligence and good taste. Now everyone else can see that he is. I also noticed he had a link to the Ct Post (Bridgeport) of which I was a member of the editorial staff for 11 years. The Post is still one of the best papers around even though I am not on it anymore . I hope Tim will take the initiative and ask more questions regarding this Police Commission issue. I have hope that Tim will be in the forefront.
