Glass Houses
June 26th, 2007 by CindyA few years ago, when my son was just out of high school, I brought him to Bridgeport City Hall to work for a few days in the Zoning office. In Bridgeport, Planning and Zoning are separate. My son really got an “education” there because things are so much different than Cheshire. You have big city issues, constant zoning challenges, etc. But everyday when I went to drop him off, I would see Mayor Fabrizi walking around City Hall and visiting every department. This was a big undertaking on his part, because I am sure it took a big chunk of time out of his busy day to do this. My son was very impressed with this. He would stop and chat with everyone in the office, asking what was new and if there any issues. He even introduced himself to my son, which was very emotional for me because I grew up with John Fabrizi, we lived in the same neighborhood. I will never forget that.
I believe the Mayor took this time to do this because he knew the problems Bridgeport was going through at the time. The Ganim issue was very heartbreaking to the people of Bridgeport. For so many years, Bridgeport was the butt of jokes, (I know people still speak negatively about the city) and it breaks my heart. But Bridgeport always fights and so do its people. Some people here talk about Bridgeport in a bad way but they’d better look at themselves.
On Tuesday night, the Town Hall Council Chambers, the Town Council discussed the “Town Clerk” issue, where supposedly the term limits of ex-Water Pollution Control Authority Chairman Tim Pelton were changed several times over several days. The Town Council questioned Tim Slocum who is on Planning and Zoning and also Chairman of Republican nominating committee. Are these people crazy? I know a good person when I see one and Tim Slocum is one of the nicest honest persons around. He was very kind to my son Ross a few years ago.
As I have said in previous posts, things this Town Council should be noticing and filing charges on like: not implementing prevailing wage, constant bid “waivers”, etc, go unnoticed. Do they want an investigation? Well they might be getting one soon from the Department of Justice, and the people who run this town know what I am talking about. This was openly put in the paper–the targeting –and not one of these people in charge of our town had the courage to put a stop to it or question these actions. Unlike Trumbull, these people put it in writing. “Oh we are so vigiliant.” . Well so were a lot of other people who kept copies of this “log.” Their arrogance galls me. Now they might try to rake Mr. Slocum over the coals. Rake your own Town Government over the coals. Not publicizing meetings, spoonfeeding information, it goes on and on! The Undergroundtownhall supports Tim Slocum.
Talking about spoonfeeding information, at last nights Planning and Zoning meeting the commission discussed proposed changes to the Town of Cheshire Plan of Conservation and Development. I called the Zoning office and asked if these changes that were discussed were to be posted on the website. I was told they would be by late afternoon. The information is now posted on the Cheshirect.org website, hit “departments and commissions” to the left and then click on Planning and Zoning.
Many people asked for copies of the proposed “changes to the changes” if you will and were not provided with any. When I asked why, I was told “oh that meeting was not a public hearing.” So what? If the P and Z was discussing this issue and meeting was open to the public, documents should have been left on a table at the meeting for people to peruse. The Town Government is staffed by many fine people. They are honest and hardworking. We are all so blessed in this town because I personally know what a demoralizing feeling it is to know that some of the people who run your town took advantage. But it is pain in the A—people like myself and others that catch this and/or prevent it from happening in the first place. The bottom line–we need to go back to an elected First Selectman/woman position and set term limits. It has nothing to do with the current administration-it is just a protection. I know many towns in Connecticut have Town Managers, but I believe that position which is unelected has run its course. I think it may have been a reaction in the 1970’s to the Nixon resignation. But I think a new way of thinking back to the old ways needs to be looked into. Time to sweep out the “old” ways.
Speaking of sweeping, it never ceases to amaze me just how much time some people have on their hands. I am providing a link to this “person” who has come up with a “new” way of using a swiffer mop. This is from the Boing Boing blog. Need a day off from work? Well here you are:
