It seems as if it were yesterday that Playground in the Park was built. Many loving and caring hands took time out of their lives to build this great playscape. It was an innovation of its time, allowing children of all abilities to come together and play together.
And believe it or not, the playground even allowed adults to interact with their children. It was fun and it was built without any town funding. I remember taking my four kids to the playground just about every day.
On a weekday after school, the kids would still be wound up–answer–Playground in the Park. On a weekend, meeting with their friends, or a chance for the parents to catch up on gossip–Playground in the Park .
It seemed no matter how hot it was in the summer, there would always be a breeze.
The ice cream person (I don’t dare say man), would show up and the kids would have a treat. Or if you really wanted to treat the kids (back then), we would go to McDonald’s and take it to the Playground and eat it there at the picnic tables.
It was so much fun and it seems that Cheshire was a different type of community then. I mean let’s face it, Lori Rusnack and Katie Bateson managed to fundraise over $90,000 without involving the town AT ALL!!
People actually volunteered their time to work on the project. It seems now that Cheshire, I hate to say it but I will, has turned into a Me, Myself and I town. Let my special interest group see how much we can rake out of the town (council). Then after we get what we want, and our kids graduate from high school, we will pack our bags, move out of town, and leave everyone else, (like the seniors) holding the tax bag!!
I have really seen a transformation in this town since I moved here in 1985. It seems more and more people are just wrapped up in their own lives and their own interests. It’s sad.
Lori and Kate are people who REALLY care about Cheshire. This is their legacy to the town that now will be forever lost. I am all for progress and new ideas, but I wish the town could save this playground. I guess it dates back to a simpler time and a simpler Cheshire. A small photo tribute is on the home page. A few more photos will be added over the weekend.
Also–I know you all noticed my ad on the Senior page (appropriate) in the Herald. I had a hard time getting the Herald but I know you can guess why??
If I win a seat on the Council, I definitely will hire my favorite group “Severe Tire Damage” to rock it out people!! We will have to wait and see.
